Don Dixon’s co-production of R.E.M.’s kudzu-infested debut Murmur spearheaded the jangly power-pop renaissance of the ’80s. For that alone, he’s a cultural treasure. Ever since, if there was any worthwhile music coming out of the Southeast, most likely Dixon had his finger in the pie. He’s produced Chris Stamey, Charlotte’s Fetchin Bones and more, while recording a string of solo efforts centered on smart, edgy and soulful pop. (Jeff Hahne)
