Exhibit: Spirits & Spaces: The Prints of Michael B. Platt

It's hard to take your eyes off the work of Michael B. Platt. In his current Charlotte-based exhibit, Spirits & Spaces (on view until Oct. 3), Platt — a "visual storyteller" — makes use of digital photography and the printing process to express traces of the human spirit. The resulting images register as both frightening and comforting ... and demand a double (or triple) take.

$5-$8. Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sunday 1 p.m.-5 p.m. The Harvey B. Gantt Center For African American Arts + Culture, 551 S. Tryon St. 704-547-3700.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
