A Novello Evening with Charles Frazier

North Carolina native Charles Frazier saw his first novel, Cold Mountain, go straight to the top, becoming an international best seller, a critically acclaimed film and the winner of the 1997 National Book Award for Fiction. Now Frazier's back with his latest book, Thirteen Moons. Frazier will be interviewed by UNC TV's North Carolina Bookwatch host, D.G. Martin, with special guest, Myrtle Driver, a member of the Cherokee Nation who is working to translate Thirteen Moons into the Cherokee language.

At the age of 13, Ishmael Beah became a solder in war-torn Sierra Leone. A gentle boy at heart, he found that he was capable of truly terrible acts. Saved years later by a UNICEF rehabilitation program, Beah became a human rights activist and the author of A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier.

This year's theme is "Reading Opens Your World" and sets an international flavor for the booth activities, street and stage performers, and even some of the food vendors.

Dave Eggers' memoir, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, was a 2001 finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. His recent novel, What is the What chronicles the lives of the Sudanese lost boys. Often called the JD Salinger of his generation, Eggers founded McSweeney, a literary magazine and publishing company and 826 National, a non-profit writing center for youth.
