Fest Or Famine

News finally breaks regarding this year's CityFest

I've had a lot of e-mails recently from folks inquiring about this year's CityFest Live! festival. The CityFest folks have released some information regarding the event specifics -- however, at press time, the only artists that have been confirmed are Acoustic Syndicate, Widespread Panic, 38 Special, Cowboy Mouth, The Big Wu and Caitlin Cary. Check out www.cityfestlive.com for more information; by the time you read this, a full schedule should be up (and, hopefully, a more varied lineup).

Charlotte native Joe Firstman, who fronted a band of the same name while here in town, has just released his Atlantic Records debut EP, Wives Tales, which ought to be in stores now. For more information, check out www.FirstmanMusic.com.

Central Piedmont Community College has announced the lineup for the 5th Annual Frolic at CPCC, to be held on the campus green on April 12 from noon until 7pm. Performers for the event include Etta Baker, George Higgs, The Badgett Sisters, Ron and Brooks Gulledge, Ramona Moore Big Eagle, The Cockman Family and A Sign of the Times. For more information, visit www.cpcc.cc.nc.us/folk_frolic/.

Andrew Webster, host of the Complex Radio Local Music Show, announced that his show will air on WSGE 91.7 from 1am to 2am on Friday nights. For further details about the show, log onto www.complexradio.com. For those unable to pick up the station, there will be a radio party at the SK Net Cafe (Elizabeth Avenue) during the show time. For more info, call 704-365-3125.

The indefatigable Tracie Nasta of Nasty Promotions is looking for musicians wishing to take part in "tribute" shows, as well as artists, musicians, performance artists and dancers interested in performing in the Artoxication Series, an arts showcase held at The Steeple Lounge. Those interested should contact Tracie at nastypromotions@excite.com.

Those wanting to take a road trip to a roots music festival but are intimidated by the size of MerleFest might want to check out the Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival of Music and Dance, a non-profit event taking place near Chapel Hill. The festival, which takes place April 10-13, will feature over 40 bands on four stages, on-site camping, food, arts, crafts, dancing, workshops, a poetry slam contest, a fiddler's contest, a kid's area and more. Acts scheduled to appear include Donna the Buffalo, Acoustic Syndicate, The Del McCoury Band, Jim Lauderdale, Trailerbride, Alejandro Escovedo and many others. An advance four-day weekend ticket is $65 until April 1 ($75 after April 1). Vehicle camping (motor homes, pop-ups, vans, cars, etc.) is $20 for the weekend, and tent camping is free. Parking is $10 for the weekend per vehicle, and day parking is $5 (free for vehicles with four or more occupants). Call 919-542-8142 to purchase tickets, or visit www.grassrootsfest.org.

Ten Missing Days will hold a CD release party for their first full-length CD, Cellar Door, at Tremont Music Hall on March 21, beginning at 8pm. Also appearing will be One Six Conspiracy, Sckapegoat and The Paris Centerfold. The band has a pre-release album sampler available at Rock N' Roll Emporium, Ink Link Tattoos, Manifest, Infinity's End, Guitar Center and elsewhere (check out www.tenmissingdays.com).

Weekend Excursion has announced that guitarist Chris Groch will be leaving the band after eight years with the group. Groch says that folks may still contact him at chris@weekendexcursion.com for the time being. The Excursion boys then announced that they have signed ex-bass player Danny Donovan to take the vacant slot, with current bassist Josh Perryman taking over Groch's guitar duties. For more info, check out www.weekendexcursion.com.
