FESTIVAL: Azucar Caribbean Celebration

Friday, June 3

When you think of the Caribbean, its rich culture and relaxing atmosphere should spring to mind, rather than silly things like pirates and ... Johnny Depp. The Latin American Coalition's Azucar Caribbean Celebration bridges the gap with a zesty Spanish Caribbean cultural extravaganza coming to Neighborhood Theatre. It's complete with traditional dancing (Cuban mambo, cha-cha-cha and Afro-Cuban by Havana Social Club, contemporary moves Charlotte Salsa), live music (Dominican merengue, bachata, reggaeton genres with special performances by Orquesta Mayor and more), handmade arts and crafts, authentic cuisine and ice cold mojitos to wash it all down. $10-$15. 8 p.m. Neighborhood Theatre, 511 E. 36th St. 704-358-9298. www.neighborhoodtheatre.com.
