FESTIVAL: ScanFest of the Carolinas

Saturday, Nov. 8

Throw ye runestones down, put on your Viking helmet or dress-up as favorite characters inspired by Scandinavian authors -- like Pippi Longstocking or some big-nosed troll -- and head over to ScanFest of the Carolinas for a celebration of Scandinavia. For those of you who flunked geography and don't know what I'm talking about, that's the European countries: Iceland, Finland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The fest, presented by the Scandinavian American General Assembly of the Carolinas has a Viking village, cultural exhibits, Scandinavian folk music, dancing, a marketplace, children's activities (including Lego Creation) and best of all, food. Who can resist the traditional Swedish meatballs and lingoberry? And then there's deserts -- spice cake, marble cake, chocolate balls and more. It'll all have you sending praise to Odin. Free. 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Wachovia Atrium, 301 S. Tryon St. www.scandinavianconnection.org.
