FILM: Clash By Night

Monday, March 30

The film series The Lady Eve: The Films of Barbara Stanwyck concludes with a screening of the 1952 drama Clash By Night. Based on Clifford Odets' play and smoothly directed by Fritz Lang, this casts Stanwyck as a world-weary woman who returns to her small hometown; there, she marries a lunkish but good-hearted fishing boat captain (Paul Douglas) and then carries on an affair with his unscrupulous best friend (Robert Ryan). Marilyn Monroe co-stars as an independent-minded factory worker who enjoys a feisty relationship with her macho fiancé (Keith Andes), and rarely has this perpetually underrated actress appeared sexier. Until its weak-kneed conclusion, Clash By Night is an engrossing movie: literate, poignant and extremely well-acted. Free. 7 p.m. Wachovia Playhouse, ImaginOn, 300 E. 7th St. 704-416-0252.
