Forget the summer-matinee likes of Jim Carrey, Cameron Diaz and Johnny Depp: An all-star cast of a different sort can be found populating the new movie Fear of a Black Republican. Filmed over the course of six years, this documentary from filmmaker Kevin J. Williams takes an in-depth look at why so few African-Americans belong to the Republican Party, and it further explores how this discrepancy affects both major parties as well as the country as a whole. For his film, Williams was able to interview a veritable who's-who of prominent conservatives, including Michael Steele, Mitt Romney, John McCain, Ann Coulter and Mike Huckabee; he also scores face time with Professor Cornel West as well as Edward Brooke, the only African-American Republican since the 19th century to be elected senator (and, incidentally, the first Republican to call for President Richard Nixon's resignation following Watergate). There will be a Q&A session following the screening, and a portion of the ticket proceeds will benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. $20. 1 p.m. Duke Energy Theatre, Spirit Square, 345 N. College St. Movie info: www.fearofablackrepublican.com. Tickets: www.blumenthalarts.org.
