FILM: For-Adults-Only Monday Movies

Monday, Jan. 3

Gaston County Public Library's 2011 For-Adults-Only Monday Movies series (featuring award-winning foreign and independent films) begins with a screening of the Scandinavian drama/thriller, Troubled Water. In the film, a young man — fresh out of prison for a crime he says he didn't commit — must take charge of his life. He begins playing the organ at an Oslo church where all is fine and dandy, that is until someone who knows of his past catches up with him. Film is in Norwegian with English subtitles and appropriate for adults and teens 17 years old and up. Free. 6:30 p.m. Gaston County Public Library, 1555 E. Garrison Blvd., Gastonia. 704-868-2167.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
