FILM: "The Faces of Afghanistan" film series

Saturday, Nov. 6

The United States has entered the 10th year of its "war on terror" in Afghanistan, Osama bin Laden is still on the loose and soldiers and innocent civilians keep getting killed. There's really no other way to describe the situation than grim. Keeping all this in mind, the Canadian Consul has teamed up with the Main Library to present a film series, titled "The Faces of Afghanistan." It features three documentaries that highlight current events in Afghanistan from an Afghan refugee standpoint. The series kicks off on Nov. 6 with screenings of Good Morning Kandahar and Afghan Chronicles. Then on Nov. 13 it wraps up with The Sweetest Embrace: Return to Afghanistan. Following each screening, a guest speaker with insight on the refugee situation in Afghanistan will address key elements in the films during a discussion with attendees. Free. 2 p.m. Frances Auditorium at the Main Library, 310 N. Tryon St. 704-416-0557. www.plcmc.org.
