Film: Thou Shalt Not Splurge

Friday, Jan. 11

Starting the second Friday of the month, the Charlotte Film Society presents its brand-spanking new Second Weekend Series through Monday, making for a four-day weekend of movies. One film will be shown per month, representing the quality that CFS has become known for bringing to Charlotte audiences. The program kicks off with What Would Jesus Buy?, a look at the commercialization of Christmas from Morgan Spurlock, the crazy guy behind the Academy-Award-nominated Super Size Me. Series runs through May. 4:30 p.m. & 7 p.m. Park Terrace Cinema 6, Park Road Shopping Center, 4289 Park Rd.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
