Free Comic Book day hits Charlotte in a big way

Get Iron Man gratis

Want to get your hands on some Iron Man comics without shelling out cash? Well, be sure to check out Free Comic Book Day.

Set to be held on May 3 at comic book shops around the country (including right here in Charlotte), Free Comic Book Day was created as an annual way to get new readers interested in the art form.

Most local comic retailers will join in the celebration, serving up a gaggle of brand-new complimentary comics from a wide range of publishers to all takers. But the local comic super store Heroes Aren't Hard To Find always makes a bigger deal out of the day than most.

Along with free comic book giveaways (they're promising to have more than 12,000 free comics on hand that day), the folks at Heroes (who provide this paper with review materials) are also bringing in several guest comic book artists -- like Cully Hamner, Brian Stelfreeze, Ethan Van Sciver and more -- to sign autographs and draw free sketches.

Bring your friends, bring your kids, and snag some free stuff.

May 3. 1-5 p.m. Heroes Aren't Hard To Find, 1957 E. 7th St. 704-375-7462. www.heroesonline.com. To find a comic shop near you, call 1-888-COMIC-BOOK.
