Gifts for the comic fans on your list

As you get geared up for a month or so of holiday shopping, don't forget the geeks in your life. To that end, below you'll find my picks for great stuff to buy all your beloved comic book lovers.

Icons: The DC Comics and Wildstorm Art of Jim Lee: Artist Jim Lee (who currently serves as co-publisher of DC Comics) was one of a handful of illustrators who gained fame in the 1990s. Unlike a lot of his peers, however, he has managed to remain an industry superstar — and that's because he can draw his ass off. His best stuff is on display in this new, giant-sized art book, which features sketches, model sheets, pin-up images, sequential art and more from comics like Batman, Superman and Wildcats, among many others. ($39.95. Titan Books.)

Footnotes in Gaza: Writer/artist Joe Sacco — the man behind acclaimed graphic novels like Palestine — is back with a new 418-page tome that blends journalism, history and personal narratives with the comic format. Footnotes is informative, infuriating, entertaining and enriching — in other words, it's one hell of a book. ($23. Metropolitan Books.)

Neil Young's Greendale: As the title suggests, this hardcover original graphic novel is based on the music and lyrics of legendary singer/songwriter Neil Young. Well, it uses Young's work as a starting point ... then, over the course of the story, it evolves into a lush, touching, satisfying reading experience. The icing on the cake is the simple, yet stylized, art of Cliff Chiang. ($19.99. Vertigo.)

The Walking Dead: I've been raving about how good The Walking Dead is for years. But now that the post-apocalyptic zombie tale is a hit TV show on AMC, everybody's riding this comic's nuts. Oh, well. While you're enjoying the show, be sure to pick up any of the Walking Dead collected editions. All of these trade paperbacks are cataloged in sequential order, so it's easy to read this long-running piece of serialized fiction from the start. (Prices vary. Image Comics.)
