Going Postal Fight Real Crimes

Letters From Our Readers

Fight Real CrimesThank you to Tara Servatius for her "A Needless Tragedy" column (CL, July 31), emphasizing that the death of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Sergeant Anthony Scott Futrell as a result of the "War on Drugs" was totally senseless. Like Tara, I don't think drug use is good. However, using law enforcement to fight it is the wrong strategy. Doing so not only distorts the economics of drug production, but diverts valuable law enforcement resources from more legitimate concerns (like investigating property crimes). I only wonder how many serious crimes were committed as a result of Sargeant Futrell being dispatched to fight the "War on Drugs" instead of pursuing real crimes. -- Stephen V. Gilmore, Charlotte

Those Sneaky EvangelicalsBarry Yeoman's superb article "Fundamentalist Feeding Frenzy" (CL, July 31) parallels many of the evangelical tactics used to convert Jews. Every Jew out there needs to know that for a nominal fee, they can receive a booklet that will teach them how to counteract missionary claims and efforts, while also explaining the basic tenets of the Judaic faith.

One quote on page 32 of Yeoman's article really struck me. "The journal Missiology says that missionaries urge Palestinian students to adopt Christian beliefs -- but to still call themselves Muslim." This is nothing new. For the Jewish convert, Jesus Christ becomes "Yeshua Ha machiac" (Jesus Christ in Hebrew), there are no churches, but "messianic synagogues." The "rabbis" have names like "Chaim" and "Moishe." Last but not least, the sacred Passover commemorating the Exodus becomes no more than a parody, the matzoh representing the body of their messiah, etc. Enough said.

I implore all Jews to get in touch with the organization "Jews for Judaism" at These rabbis are brilliant counter-missionaries and maintain a 70 percent success rate of bringing back Jewish converts to Judaism.

Thank you again for printing Mr. Yeoman's article. -- Name withheld by request

Rick and OsamaYour article on the "Stealth Crusade" has given more fuel to the fire that fundamentalist so-called Christian organizations in this country are as biased and evil as the radical Islam fundamentalists.

Organizations such as CIU have perverted the Christian religion as much as Osama bin Laden has perverted Islam. The sheer arrogance that has been "brainwashed" into the students and missionaries from this school is astounding.

These people do not embody the actual teachings of Jesus any more than bin Laden embodies the teachings of Mohammed. The only difference between Rick Love and his "missionaries" and Osama bin Laden and his Al Queda terrorists is that Al Queda seeks to destroy with bombs and guns, and Rick Love does his work under the guise of a man who taught love, understanding, acceptance, and the fulfillment that God is everywhere, not just in America, and not just in the Christian religion.

Mr. Love and his cohorts would do well to take a hard look in the mirror and deal with their own self-righteous indignation and arrogance. What a pity that after thousands of years of turmoil, death and destruction caused by ignorance and self aggrandizement, we cannot come back to the one thing that Jesus and every other religious master has taught. . .and that is that we are all One.

Rick Love, the last time I checked, God had no religious affiliation. -- Michael Thomas, CharlotteDon't Promote Statutory RapePlease help me understand why you have chosen to use the upcoming release of the Miramax film Tadpole to promote your romance personal ad service.

It seems to me that a film that glorifies and promotes statutory rape and pedophilia isn't the wisest choice of promotional vehicles.

I wonder if you would choose this film if the roles played by Sigourney Weaver and Bebe Neuwirth were played by men sexually interested in a 15-year-old boy, instead of women. By encouraging people to see this film with such un-American themes as adults-as-sexual predators of children, you are doing much more than expressing your First Amendment rights. You are crying "Fire" in a theater crowded with those of us who would choose to protect children in the world rather than exploit them. -- Mike Eisner, Pineville
