Harleys and hockey

The cowbell cures all

Apparently, I was in need of a testosterone supplement, because last Wednesday I got a double dose of it with Harleys and hockey.

I double-booked my nightlife with the last Charlotte Checkers' home game followed by the first Bike Night at Quaker Steak and Lube in Concord -- one season ends, another begins. That season being the one we're in for which the weekend begins on Wednesday.

I got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell ...

In addition to the $2 beers, the highlight of the game was the Checker's cowbell tradition; they even play the infamous Saturday Night Live skit featuring Will Ferrell. If you ask me, the rink is just a giant ice sculpture the party happens around. It was even like a Ferrell movie between the cowbells -- the fight going on one row over from me and a giant pink bunny rabbit with an itchy crotch from someone smothering Icy Hot in his bunny costume ... silly wabbit.

My dimples got tired by the second period and my face hurt from laughing so much. I was definitely doing more partying than spectating, but I started paying attention to the game after a hockey puck landed on my lap ... Holy Hockey Puck!

I have few fears in life, among them are any creature with more than four legs and less than two ... and motorcycles. But I will bravely sit on a parked one, which is why I hoofed it up to Concord for Quaker Steak and Lube's first bike night.

The parking lot was verging on full, yet my Wrangler was one of only a few automobiles. When there isn't a random cold front coming through, there are as many as 1,400 bikes -- but not so much on opening night.

They had a live band singing to a small crowd of leather clad bikers outside on the patio, and inside, the Carolina Speed Arena Football team was having a team dinner ... random.

That same night, Coyotes in Kannapolis was having their second bike night with two bands and a bike competition; think a bikini contest, for bikes.

Bike night's popularity has made it a category of nightlife, like college and salsa nights; there are bike nights all week-long.

Tuesday is Bike Night at Cans with bike competitions and give-aways. Wednesdays are delegated between Quaker Steak and Lube and Coyotes, and then Thursday's are for Iron Thunder. Max's is the spot for the weekend riders, and there's always the gay biker bar, The Charlotte Eagle, and the Gay and Lesbian Biker Rally on June 10-11.
