Iceberg Slim; Portrait of a Pimp

While you only may have heard of Iceberg Slim in lyrical references, like Jay-Z’s “Fuck All Night,” it’s about time to get acquainted. The once-pimp, who reformed himself into a writer at 42, is one of the most important, yet unsung, figures of African-American culture. His books, which detailed his tenure in “the game” with brutal realism, made him one of best-selling African-American writers of all time — exerting influence on hip-hop figures such as Ice-T (who produced the biographical film) Snoop Dogg and Quincy Jones. The film follows Slim, a.k.a. Robert Beck from his early childhood in Chicago through his life of crime and then his shift to writing, using interviews from the artists he influenced to contextualize and examine his life and writing career. With cameos by Ice-T, Chris Rock, Katt Williams and Henry Rollins, as well as interview nuggets from Slim, this film makes for a stimulating addition to the repertoire being delivered by the Charlotte Black Film Festival.
