Falling 'StarLocal band calls it quits

Cotter Guitars, a stringed instrument repair facility and retail store, recently set up shop at The Playroom rehearsal facility (located at 916 Tuckaseegee Road). In addition to being a fully functional luthier shop, owners Chris Cotter and Paul Hackney buy and sell vintage instruments as well. Special orders are available through the shop, too. Cleveland County-based (and Visulite regulars) Acoustic Syndicate were a late add to the Farm Aid 2001 benefit concert that was held on September 29 in Noblesville, IN. For more details on the band, go to www.acousticsyndicate.com.
The Bel Air Saints are still trying to recoup after being robbed in August of just about every piece of equipment they own. The band estimates $15,000-$20,000 worth of equipment was stolen from a storage rental facility they used for rehearsal space. Bassist Clyde Covington says although the whole experience was a bit disheartening, it's definitely been a learning experience. Covington says any band with a large amount of equipment may want to look into specialized insurance policies because some homeowner policies won't cover band equipment. The Saints' next show in town is Saturday, October 6, at Tremont Music Hall.

Charley, host of 90 Minutes on WEND 106.5-FM, has left the station and is continuing a career in radio in Myrtle Beach, SC. KanawhaPalooza 02, a music conference and showcase taking place in Charleston, WV, is currently accepting submissions for performers. The showcase will take place the weekend of February 1-2, 2002. As I reported in my last column, Hipshack was scheduled to perform at the Davis Cup Tennis Tournament in Winston-Salem on September 21-23, but due to the terrorist attacks, the tournament was postponed until the weekend of October 12-14. The band will still be performing, and the event will air on ESPN.

The Bayou Kitchen is presenting a Free Fall Music Series. Bands are scheduled to play each Sunday through the end of October. Carolina Gator Gumbo, Pervis Lee and David Childers are a few of the acts scheduled to perform.
Acoustic Stage, an all-volunteer non-profit organization based in Hickory, is pleased to host the kick-off of a nationwide tour featuring Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer. Chapel Hill's Southern Culture On The Skids played at PETA'S Anniversary and Humanitarian Awards Party held last month in New York City. Of course, the band had to drop their meaty songs (i.e. Too Much Pork for Just One Fork or Carve That Possum) from the set and abstain from throwing any fried chicken into the crowd. Paul McCartney, Chrissie Hynde, Russell Simmons and Pamela Anderson were honored at the event.
