It's a flat world after all

Where to find the best paninis

• Chef owner Chris Edwards' New South Kitchen is offering a bevy of lighter, summer-styled paninis on the lunch and dinner menus this week, including the lemon roasted chicken with house-made tasso ham, fontina cheese and grilled red onions; and the portabella mushroom panini with roasted red peppers, tomatoes and mozzarella. $8 to $10. New South Kitchen & Bar, 8140 Providence Road, 704-541-9990.

• The grilled Cubano, although missing the sliced pork component, is a perfection of warmed ham, melted Swiss, a mustard threesome and the requisite pickle on Arto's Bakery's focaccia ($5.95) at Salvador Deli, a favorite NoDa eatery. Next best is the roast beef with thinly sliced Granny Smith apples and oozing brie. Salvador Deli & Market, 3215 N. Davidson St., 704-334-2344.

• You cannot beat the price of $4.95 for enormous and delicious paninis at the deli counter at the Morrocroft Harris Teeter. Order the Parisian with ham, provolone, lettuce, tomato and a boursin cheese sauce, or the roast beef and bacon. Soon the deli will be adding more combinations but keeping the price. Harris Teeter Morrocroft Village, 6701 Morrison Blvd., 704-364-1245.

• The Southern pulled pork barbecue panini ($5.95) is the singular recommendation, and unusual take on a local favorite, at Pressini, a franchise shop in the Ayrsley Shopping Center. Note, though, that the pork is not made in-house. Also bypass the homemade potato chips, which are way too thick and heavily dosed with dry spices. Pressini Pressed Sandwiches, 2215 Ayrsley Town Blvd., 704-347-7979.
