• First Book-Charlotte's annual Spring Gala is here again. "An Evening of Magic, Celebrating the Magic of Books" will be held at ImaginOn on Friday, May 30, from 7 to 11 p.m. First Book-Charlotte is a charity that benefits local children by buying books for area literacy programs. This black-tie-optional event hopes to raise more than $60,000. The evening will include a silent auction, live entertainment, a First Book Speed Read and a gourmet dinner. Tickets are $100 and can be purchased through the box office at 704-973-2828 or online at www.firstbookcharlotte.org.

• Actor/author Hill Harper will be coming through Charlotte on Wednesday, June 4, to discuss and sign copies of his new book Letters to a Young Sister: DeFINE your Destiny. (Gotham, $15.30). In the follow-up to his hit Letters to a Young Brother: MANifest your Destiny (Gotham $13.95), Harper once again provides advice and life lessons to a young generation in the form of letters from some well-known and accomplished women. Harper offers encouragement and love as he talks about becoming the architect of your own life, avoiding credit card addiction and dealing with the opposite sex. The event will be held at Joseph-Beth Booksellers, 4345 Barclay Downs Dr., at 5:30 p.m.
