Jewel hunting

Saturday, April 28

The First Lady of Turks and Caicos LisaRaye McCoy-Misick is in search of a precious jewel to bestow gifts and splendor upon. Her Miss RayeDiant Jewels Teen Pageant will premiere here in Charlotte in June. But, first Mrs. Misick has enlisted the help of Monica Swann, the casting director from her show "All of Us," to aid in the auditions that will produce the young beauty. The young ladies, ages 13-15, will go through the usual hoops of the pageant format: evening gown, Q & A, Talent, the bonus here is the "Thrifty Diva Competition" where the participants are asked to show their fashion savvy by crafting an outfit from clothes purchased at Goodwill and/or Salvation Army outlets. 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Concord Mills Mall, 8111 Concord Mills Blvd., Concord. www.rayediantjewels.com.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
