Joseph Herscher: The Dresser

Joseph Herscher would probably make cartoonist Rube Goldberg proud. Herscher is like a character from one of Goldberg’s cartoons — using crazy, inventive gadgets that perform conventional tasks. For reference, YouTube his “Creme That Egg” vid, which documents one of his devices in action. Herscher, a native of New Zealand who resides in Brooklyn, is currently a Knight artist-in-residence at McColl Center for Visual Art. His latest concoction, a kinetic sculpture called “The Dresser,” was unveiled during a reception back in September, but on Nov. 9, visitors will get to see exactly how the machine works during a series of demos slated to take place throughout the day at McColl. Herscher, who created the strange gadget that performs conventional tasks, will be in attendance. His constructions, often humorous for their humble materials and functions, are described by the artist as very wasteful ways to save energy.
