Justin Robinson and the Mary Annettes; Big Something

JUSTIN ROBINSON When Robinson left the Carolina Chocolate Drops earlier this year, it certainly made waves. You’d be hard-pressed to find many artists willing to walk away from a Grammy Award-winning band the year they won it. Then again, having an all Black, old-time string band was a rarity to begin with. Robinson’s new project features he and the Mary Annette’s, a group of multi-instrumentalists, combining what he’s done in the past with their own background of musical experiences. (Mike McCray) BIG SOMETHING This sextet can be loosely tagged as a jam band, but then there’s sinewy saxophone, reggae flourishes, Southern rock, blues and twangy roots mussin’ things up a bit. Spacey tracks like “Sunday” make for intriguing forays outside the jam-rock realm. The band is doing some winter touring while prepping the release of their recording, Live at the Costume Ball.
