Karma Cleanser

This week, we're cleaning out the mailbag with follow-up letters from folks who'd previously written the Karma Cleanser. We're always happy to hear how things worked. Well, mostly. Read on.

The Karma Cleanser

Dear Karma Cleanser:

Do you ever post updates about former letters you've received? I wanted to let you know what happened to me. Back in August, my friend had posted mean things about me on his blog. He basically called me an alcoholic and a lush. I didn't know he was writing about me on the blog and I stopped being friends with him when I found out. I started my own blog and posted one really rude thing about him on it, but then dropped the subject and started to focus on my own life. I also found a different crew to party with, and stopped drinking quite so much.

Now, the friend has started calling me again. He says he found my blog and he likes reading it a lot. I think he wants to go on a date with me, which is just weird to me. I'm not sure I want to reopen that chapter, because I think there's too much water under the bridge.

No Longer a Lush (Still Fun)

Thanks for the update, but your letter makes us chuckle. You make it sound like this situation spans decades, an epic friendship/romance in the ilk of When Harry Met Sally. But if memory serves, you only met the dude this fall. That's barely a puddle under the bridge, let alone a river. Go on the date. If nothing else, it'll give you something interesting to blog about.

Dear Karma Cleanser:

I sent you a note about my co-worker who bought me lunch to try and ply me for information. He was afraid he was about to get fired. Well, things didn't exactly go the way I had expected. Both of us ended up getting fired in early December. I didn't see that coming at all.

You're probably going to say this was what I deserved for letting the guy buy me an expensive lunch. Maybe that's true, but what is done, is done. Now the guy wants me to write him a recommendation. He says his former boss would only give him a bad one, and he knows I would do him right. I told him I'd think about it.

Appetite for Destruction

Getting the axe just before the holidays is a harsh blow indeed. Having a former co-worker refuse to help you land a new gig, now that's just cold. Help a brother out. Can it hurt?

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
