La Cage Aux Follies

Glammy drag queens and radical homosexual-fearing bigots collide in Broadway's Tony Award-winning show, La Cage Aux Folles — stopping by Charlotte with six-day run at Belk Theater. The musical, a reminder for us of the hate-fueled intolerances that brought about Amendment One's sad passage, tells the impacting familial story of Georges, a drag nightclub owner (George Hamilton), his partner Albin aka ZaZa, a lead entertainer at the club (Christopher Sieber), and Jean-Michel, Georges' newly engaged son. Jean-Michel, who arranges a family introduction dinner with his fiancee’s ultra-conservative gay-suppressing parents (the father is head of a "Tradition, Family and Morality Party" committee — scary, right?), sends his parents on a heterosexual noncross dressing charade. Thankfully, flamboyant personality traits pop out and give away their cover. Power to ZaZa for a moving "I Am What I Am" number.
