Letters to the editor

Taken by Crazy Horse

If the music of Ebony Hillbillies is half as delightful as Kandia Crazy Horse's article about them ("The Real Y'alternative," Sept. 14) seeing/hearing them should be a treat, indeed. Her writing adds a delicious element of spark and spice to your excellent paper & the Queen City scene it serves so well.

Rock on!

Johnson at the crossroads

Excellent article ("From Bandwagon to Hearse," John Grooms, Sept. 14). Robert Johnson alienated me when he decided to try to make extra money by putting most of the Bobcat games on his new subscription TV station. I wasn't about to pay extra to watch a first year expansion team, and apparently neither were many others.

Liberal press, wherefore art thou?

Recently CL and the Independent Weekly published an article about Senator Jesse Helms' memoir to which I want to respond ("Whitewash," by Barry Yeoman, Sept. 21). I know that Senator Helms made it his policy to ignore the nonsense, but I can't. The possibility that this error-ridden, twisted excuse for "reporting" might be mistaken for truth demands that the silence be broken. There is not space to correct every item from the article in this letter but contains a full list of the errors in this article and a collection of often repeated lies about Senator Helms with the facts that disprove these lies.

Senator Helms did not use any "ghost writers." As the Raleigh News and Observer said, he did have some help with the details. It was my privilege to have responsibilities in research and editorial assistance for Here's Where I Stand. For more than two years I had access to anything I needed to make sure the facts were correct. When I couldn't find contemporaneous data, I talked to eye witnesses. When Random House did their legal review of the manuscript their independent fact check concurred with its accuracy.

Why would the memoir of an 84 year-old who was so admired and respected by those who really knew him, even when they opposed him on many issues, engender such a vitriolic article from your writer? The answer is obvious. Even in his old age, the clarity and power of Senator Helms' exposure of the hollowness of leftist positions remains a threat that close-minded liberals cannot abide. They hate his record of accomplishment. They are especially angry that one thing about Senator Helms has never changed -- his ability to ignore the rants of his detractors so he could focus on living a life that matters. During the same time your writer was pouring out his collection of old lies in one last attempt to slander the Senator, the Senator himself was in the TV studio doing one last public message -- to urge members of churches across this country to get personally and financially involved in the challenge of eradicating AIDS in Africa. Try fitting that fact into the stereotype!
