UP-STAGED

It is unfortunate to read that the leadership of BareBones Theatre Group says the Arts & Science Council (ASC) does not "believe in what we do." (Urban Explorer Handbook 2007: "BareBones Theatre Group" by Branna Calloway, March 7) I wish to set the record straight on ASC's support for BareBones Theatre Group.

Over the last six years, ASC has made a direct investment of almost $30,000 in grants to BareBones. Beyond the direct investment, ASC has provided an immeasurable number of professional services to BareBones that include organization counseling and advice to staff along with securing a local accounting firm to provide pro-bono services.

For the upcoming year, BareBones can apply for up to $10,000 through ASC's Cultural Project Grant program. The grant process is very competitive. Last fiscal year we had 58 applicants, over $350,000 in requests and only $150,000 to allocate. BareBones has been a recipient of the program. Besides receiving dollars through the Cultural Project Grant program, ASC also provided a technical assistance grant to support a stage floor that was needed for their recent production of Five Women Wearing the Same Dress.

ASC is committed to supporting organizations, large and small, that express the full diversity of expression that is our cultural community.

AND THE LIST GOES ON

I'm new to Charlotte and have been reading the columns of John Grooms for several months. Something about them has bothered me, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. It's not the political differences; I've read, disagreed with, and enjoyed John Nichols, Robert Rubin, Susan Estrich, Jonathan Chait, Michael Kinsley, etc. After reading this week's BWA column a second time with a highlighter I think I've identified the source of my discomfort. This week's column didn't really defend any of his political positions. The only thing I learned from it is that people who aren't as enlightened as he is are tasteless, weasels, recklessly negligent, frat boys, stupid, moronic, incompetent, rightwing nuts, ill-educated, bigots, and quite possibly murderers. And, of course, his political allies are spineless.

With the exception of right and left, Democrat and Republican, his column is indistinguishable from something Ann Coulter would write/spew. Self-righteous condescension isn't really an attitude, it's a posture one adopts when pandering to the political prejudices and bigotries of the immature. Quite frankly, I've been expecting more.
