Licker's Last Leg

CD Review: Goon Moon

Ipecac; Release date: May 8, 2007

The Deal: Queens of the Stone Age producer Chris Goss partners up with Nine Inch Nails' Jeordie White (aka Twiggy of Marilyn Manson).

The Good: It's a combination of both bands in some ways with a little bit of "What the hell is that?" thrown in. The first track, "Apple Pie," could fit in with some of the mellower Manson stuff, while "My Machine" sounds like QOTSA mixed with Styx. "The Golden Ball" is broken up into eight pieces and sounds like early Butthole Surfers at times. Entertaining lyrics about baking children in pies and appreciating reach-arounds keep the listener entertained. They even cover a Bee-Gee's tune, "Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You."

The Bad: You know you're listening to an interesting musical creation when you have to remove headphones to figure out if the noises you hear are on the CD or in your surrounding environment. The music is sometimes simplistic, but the presence of layers of sounds and effects create a complexity that sounds more whole.

The Verdict: Surprisingly, though odd, the music stands up on its own. It's not weird for the sake of weird, it's quirky but catchy.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
