Until December 2008, when a coal ash pond broke through its earthen dam and swallowed a few hundred acres in Tennessee and everything on them, not many were aware of coal ash or the danger it represents. Today, Charlotteans are more aware of the four Duke Energy-owned, unlined, high-hazard coal ash ponds in the Charlotte area, one of which is on Mountain Island Lake (also known as our drinking water reservoir). But it's time we all learned much, much more about them.
