Love the Doctor

It might be set in the Golden Age, but Spanish playwright Tirso de Molina’s Love the Doctor — being staged at UNC-Charlotte’s Black Box Theater — is still one of the most compelling love triangle farces of all time. It follows Jerónima, a young lady from Spain who has fallen in love with a visiting Portuguese mystery man. As there was no Internet in the 17th century, you can whole-heartedly assume that desperate times called for desperate measures. This leads the ... well, rather desperate ... Jerónima to parade off to Portugal and disguise herself as a man to practice medicine (forbidden to women at the time) and woo her beau. Unfortunately deception has its consequences — the biggest being a female patient who falls in love with her disguise as Doctor Barbosa. Now that’s a prescription for pain!
