Loves It, Cicada Rhythm, Sans Abri
Stand-up bassist Andrea DeMarcus and guitarist David Kirslis of Athens, Ga., known as folk duo Cicada Rhythm, come from very different backgrounds; while Kirslis was refining his picking skills in Atlanta dive bars, DeMarcus was studying in the hallowed halls of Juilliard. Seeing them play together, though, you wouldn’t guess it. Theirs is an easy and comfortable partnership, as evidenced in their gliding harmonies and the obvious pleasure they take in being onstage together — DeMarcus, often wearing a sidelong smile when she sings, is particularly captivating. Cicada Rhythm’s songs, with their bent toward old-timey mountain music, feel instantly familiar, but can be pleasantly surprising, too. On tracks like “Do Not Destroy,” DeMarcus takes a bow to her bass, giving the song a slow, sweeping power. They may have come from different places, but they’ve arrived at a common musical ground.
