Making Charlotte Metropolitan

I found some new nightlife in Charlotte ... at Target.

Actually, I was driving through the Metropolitan community in Midtown on my way to Target and saw a band performing on a massive patio at what looked like a mini Alive After Five. Seeing as how the traditional Thursday after-work party keeps hood hopping, I find myself confused as to where it's going to be each week. So confused that I wondered if it was in fact Alive After Five -- then I realized it was Saturday.

I then noticed two new venues and a glass cross bridge leading to them from condos. When in the hell did that get there? Apparently while I was off flying to other cities, Charlotte was becoming a metropolitan city. So rather than going to Target and losing a few hours of my life shopping around when I was merely going in for one item, I went to check out this newly constructed metropolis of nightlife at Metropolitan.

They don't call it the Metropolitan for nothing -- it has a metropolitan feel with a nightlife, retail and residential blend comparable to the condos near SouthPark mall, or Birkdale Village at the lake. There's even a Dressler's. Meanwhile, Pisces Sushi Bar and Lounge opened in Metropolitan ... and now Charlotte has more sushi bars than Japan.

And the anchor store in this mall of nightlife is Vivace. This place is beautiful, inside and out -- out the window that is. Sitting on their patio makes you feel like you're sitting on the porch of the Charlotte skyline.

Vivace is "getting rowdy ... but not too rowdy," according a recent event ad. Vivace will be airing all the FIFA World Cup games -- though Courtyard Hooligans is Charlotte's premiere soccer bar. But just about every bar from Jackalope Jacks to Brazwells to the newly opened IceHouse in SouthEnd was packed to fire code capacity to watch the U.S. tie England. So, I suppose it was a tie between all the bars, too.

For a full listing of worldly bars where you can watch and cheers to the cup, go to the At Large blog. And to see pictures of this Metropolitan I speak of, check out Brittney After Dark.
