MODEST MOUSE

There was a brief moment in the mid-’00s when Modest Mouse seemed on the verge of real, actual stardom. For a band whose oddball meters, strange vocal contortions and flat-out dystopian world-view characterized early releases such as the ’96 debut This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About, Modest Mouse’s 2000 signing to Epic and breakthrough 2004 release, Good News for People Who Love Bad News, suggested a shift in the music industry that might’ve played out as tectonically as the alt-rock phenomenon launched by Nirvana a dozen years prior, were there still a music industry to speak of. The band even brought The Smiths’ whiz Johnny Marr into the fold for 2007’s We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, but he didn’t stay long, and leader Isaac Brock’s glacial writing pace — MM hasn’t released anything since ’07 — helped stall any momentum left. Still, take an afternoon to spin 2000’s The Moon & Antarctica. Bookend it with, say, fellow Northwesterners Built to Spill’s Perfect From Now On and Brock’s Ugly Casanova bandmates Califone’s Quicksand & Cradlesnakes, and fuck me if it doesn’t sound like a golden age of rock compared to the hookless synth-and-glo-sticks crowd or flaccid AmeriMumfordcana shite polluting the charts these days. Tickets were $40 before this gig sold out, so get ready to get gouged. (John Schacht)
