Month if independents

Part of Charlotte Shouts

Having just wrapped up its Carolina Filmmakers Showcase, The Light Factory jumps back into supporting local talent with its Independent Documentary Month. Billed as part of the citywide Charlotte Shout festivities, the series focuses on feature-length films created by area moviemakers.

The series kicks off at 7pm Friday, September 2, with Lance Lindahl's naked / nerve / endings, in which an entrepreneur seeking to get rich quick butts heads with an unemployed environmentalist who forms a drum circle in the businessman's back office. In addition to the movie presentation, the musicians in the film will perform a drum circle. The screening is at the McGlohon Theater; admission is $10.

Following this series premiere, other scheduled titles will be at Knight Gallery, with admission $7.

On September 8-9, Brett Ingram's Monster Road examines the radical clay creations of Frank Zappa's former house animator, Bruce Bickford. Betsy Newman's Lost and Found, a documentary about her search for her long-lost sister, will be screened September 15-16. Charlotte filmmaker Robert Whitlow's debut feature Tangled Web, about the fallout from a husband's extramarital affair, follows September 22-23. The showcase concludes September 29-30 with Karen Collins and John Disher Jr.'s Laugh At Us, which centers on an acting troupe of mentally challenged performers known as the Merry Pranksters.
