Moyers Lauds Crowther

On Friday, June 3, journalist, author and TV host Bill Moyers delivered a blistering indictment of the current state of journalism, including PBS being force-marched to the right by new public broadcasting fuhrer Kenneth Tomlinson. In that speech, Moyers quoted extensively from an article we ran in our June 1 issue by the man Moyers calls "that old journalistic warhorse, Hal Crowther." He followed his Crowther quotes by saying, "Hal Crowther is one of those journalists who goes hunting with live ammunition. But if Kenneth Tomlinson and Karl Rove have their way, public broadcasting journalists will be firing blanks."

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
