MUSIC: Greg Laswell and Jimmy Gnecco

Sunday, May 30

Melodic is one of the best words to describe the music of solo artists Greg Laswell and Jimmy Gnecco (pictured) -- both of whom will perform at The Evening Muse tonight. Laswell, whose songs have appeared on TV shows (Grey's Anatomy, True Blood, Smallville, etc.) and in films (Confessions of a Shopaholic and My Sister's Keeper), released his fourth studio album, titled Take A Bow, on May 4 and will headline the show. But, be sure to come early, as opener Gnecco -- known better as the front man, guitarist and mastermind of the talented group Ours -- is a treat. Gnecco will release his debut solo album, The Heart on July 20. If you're like me and can't wait until then, this is your chance to hear some of the newbie tunes. The combination of these two acts is fitting, as both offer music that's heavily laced with melancholy and renewel. $12. 8 p.m. The Evening Muse, 3227 N. Davidson St. 704-376-3737. www.theeveningmuse.com.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
