MUSIC: Hymns at Snug Harbor

Tuesday, Nov. 3

I considered taking a break this time from pimping the music of Hymns, native NCers (now calling Brooklyn home), but then they released their pimpalicious Appaloosa EP this summer. The five tracks solidify their '60s psych-twang roots (think Kinks/Exile Stones) while expanding into soul and The White Album terrain with such aplomb you wonder if there's any era or style these guys can't make their own. They also deliver the goods live. With Nicole Atkins & the Black Sea, and Stephen Warwick of Secondhand Stories. First night of a two-night Snug Harbor stand. $8-$10. 9 p.m. Snug Harbor, 1228 Gordon St. 704-333-9799. www.snugrock.com.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
