Music: Soul of sounds

FRIDAY, JULY 25

JULY 25 -- With vocalist D'Angelo still off the scene, music lovers may wonder where they can soul-filled tunes stained with jazzy undertones. My advice? Take a listen to the singer named Dwele. The Detroit native's new CD, Sketches of a Man, is filled with mellow, soulful vocals and cool, muted horns. Expect to hear new and material like this when he swings through Charlotte. $20. 8:30 p.m. Amos' Southend, 1423 S. Tryon St. 704-377-6874. www.amossouthend.com.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
