MUSIC: Steve Martin and The Steep Canyon Rangers

Saturday, Oct. 10

It's hard to get past the funny Steve Martin we all know from movies and comedy acts and think of him seriously playing music. And yet we have no choice but to move on because his new CD, titled The Crow, proves his transition to banjo pickin' is no joking matter. Having teamed up with a bluegrass entourage known as The Steep Canyon Rangers, Martin will visit the Q.C. for a performance at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center's newest venue, Knight Theater tonight. With special guest Dave Barry. $54 and up. 8 p.m. Knight Theater, 430 S. Tryon St. 704-372-1000. www.blumenthalcenter.org.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
