New Horizons: Upcycling

For Colombia-born, Charlotte-based painter Edwin Gil, art is a means of survival. Creating art, he has said, feeds his soul and honors his heritage and community. Gil, the man behind the Charlotte-Mecklenburg main library's Con 'A' de Arte (A For Art), Art Si (Art Yes) and other creative projects, has been busy having a go at upcycling. (No, this has nothing to do with bikes.) His works repurpose discarded materials, turning them into art, which is showcased in New Horizons: Upcycling. Gil's latest series is filled with large pieces of old window glass that have been painted to depict famous Charlotte influences — from Queen Charlotte of England to NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt — and historical and mythological figures, such as "Mother Nature" (pictured).
