Nightlife exists on the lake

There's more up to our north than water and boats

I'm not going to lie to you; I have been slacking on partying. I wasn't in Charlotte last weekend reporting for duty as a nightlife columnist. I was back in Virginia due to the marriage epidemic going around. I have to travel five more weekends this summer for bachelorette parties and receptions.

But I don't mind, considering weddings tend to make for the best parties. Think about it -- open bar, free dinner, old people dancing and everyone's in a good mood and looking hot. I should star in my own series of Charlotte wedding crashers to get the local scoop ...

Charlotte seems to have just as much going on throughout the week as the weekend. There's BoWiing at Cans on Monday, Pop Life at Prevue on Wednesdays and Alive After Five on Thursdays. And let's not forget the Stuff party on June 28 at Cans.

With that said you can reserve your weekends for weddings, or better yet, trips to the beach -- or Lake Norman.

But you don't need to wait for the weekend to sail up to some watering holes on the water; apparently the lake is the place to be on Tuesdays. And through my voyage on Lake Norman, I discovered a whole other nightlife world up there where you can arrive by boat.

I jumped aboard an invite from the Charlotte Checkers to the Lake Norman Comedy Zone that's hidden in the Galway Hooker's attic. And there I discovered my new favorite drink: Diet Cherry Coke (as in cherry vodka). The main act was Sean Austin, a comedian in a cowboy hat. He remixed Alan Jackson's version of "Summertime Blues" -- rather than "there ain't no cure for the summertime blues," it's "there ain't no cure for Herpes Simplex 2."

Following the Comedy Zone, we went to Rusty Rudder to play human bumper cars (it was so damn crowded). The tiki-bar crowd made me feel like I walked into a Hollister catalog. Simplified was playing in the bar and a boom box was playing hip-hop in the bathroom where some girls were having a makeshift dance party. NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin was there, thus the pit lizards were crawling all over.

There are all kinds of fish in the sea of nightlife at The Lake ...

City Tavern, Vinnie's, Joker's Dueling Piano Bar, Moe's Ale House and Marina, Double Door country bar, On the Rocks martini bar, Midtown Sundries, Havana Social Club and NV Lounge that brings in big name hip-hop artists to the lake. A new spot, Eagles, just opened. And let's not forget all the partying on the actual water.
