No Loss For Words

On the third anniversary of 9/11

I write this on the third anniversary of September 11, searching for words -- which is unusual considering the thousands of words I've written over the past three years. Words about what happened that day and what has happened to America, a country I love, since then. But somehow, other people's words come to mind, words that inspire me and anger me and frustrate me.

She plays with her goat in her house. She plays with her goat in the yard. But the goat did something that made the girl's dad mad. The goat ate things. -- from "The Pet Goat," the story that enthralled a President 9/11/2001.

The sky was falling and streaked with blood. I heard you calling me, then you disappeared into the dust. Up the stairs, into the fire. I need your kiss, but love and duty called you someplace higher, somewhere up the stairs, into the fire. -- Bruce Springsteen, "Into The Fire."

Let the eagle soar, Like she's never soared before. From rocky coast to golden shore, Let the mighty eagle soar. Soar with healing in her wings, As the land beneath her sings: Only God, no other kings. Let the eagle soar. -- John Ashcroft, Charlotte 2002.

. . .it has put us in a position of appearing to the world as an arrogant nation. And here we are 10,000 miles away from home fighting for the so-called freedom of the Vietnamese people when we have not even put our own house in order. . .The judgment of God is upon us today. And we could go right down the line and see that something must be done -- and something must be done quickly. We have alienated ourselves from other nations so we end up morally and politically isolated in the world. -- Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., Washington, DC, 1968.

The war is not meant to be won, it is meant to be continuous. Hierarchical society is only possible on the basis of poverty and ignorance. -- George Orwell, 1984.

I'm a war President! -- George W. Bush, 2004.

You're fired! -- Donald Trump
