PASSION PIT
Orson Welles once called a movie studio “the best toy a boy ever had.” Similarly, Passion Pit wunderkind Michael Angelakos goes apeshit in his toy of choice, the recording studio, layering his squiggly sugar-fed melodies with yearning synths, glitchy effects and even a Swedish a cappella trio. Out of the gate with the Chunk of Change EP, released in 2008, Angelakos contrasted his aural confections with personal lyrics both disturbed and tremulous. Any desired gravitas was undercut by his helium falsetto and his begging-to-be-outdated Hot Chip-style dance floor geekitude. Thus, the beating heart Angelakos aimed for proved elusive. But a funny thing happened to Passion Pit on the way to sweet-but-disposable laptop pop oblivion. Angelakos’ lyrical and musical approach matured and deepened. With the forthcoming Gossamer LP, melodies emerge from the bouncy-stompy nexus of Modest Mouse, Animal Collective and Mercury Rev, and while the dark and doubtful lyrics are still deeply personal, they are more universal and less encoded. Like the classic pop composers Jerome Kern and Irving Berlin that he cites as influences, Angelakos has found that sweet spot where “a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down.”
