Past Legal Aces

Wednesday, September 26

Tennis bigwigs are coming to town for some sort of tournament or whatever. Well, the lack of enthusiasm is due to the fact that the participants have all retired from regular play, so it's mostly an old geezer tourney. This year, the Championships at The Palisades will feature Pete Sampras, Jim Courier, and Todd Martin among others. Yeah, this group of "geezers" are sure to heat up the court with a lively display of forehand, backhand, and even accidental winners. The tournament continues through September 30. For a complete schedule and more info, check the Web site. 7 p.m. $15-$95. The Palisades Country Club, 13704 Grand Palisades Pkwy. 704-504-0099. www.championsseriestennis.com/charlotte2007b.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
