Predictions for 2010

I always get a ball of nervous anticipation in the pit of my stomach when a local club owner, publicist or booking agent hints to me, "We've got some great things lining up for next year ..."

It's hard to make predictions in the world of music because you never know what band will release an album, who is going on tour or what will happen. We know about a few shows heading our way -- Black Eyed Peas, Cage the Elephant and Norah Jones have announced tour dates in town. Further with Phil Lesh and Bob Weir of The Grateful Dead are heading this way, too. The Warped Tour will be back, Brooks & Dunn's final tour will make its way here and the summer concerts at the two outdoor venues are sure to bring some big names on hot nights.

I'd keep an eye on the smaller venues though. If you read the main music story this week, you'll see a handful of shows you may have missed that were some of the year's best. You never know if a big name will have a small side project to showcase in a more intimate setting.

On the local scene, we've got three Homebrew CDs under our belt, so you can expect the fourth installment next year. The New Familiars are wrapping up their next effort, Evelynn Rose is heading back to the studio, Andy the Doorbum is going to celebrate five years in February ... the list goes on and on.

One thing's for sure -- there's going to be a lot of great music recorded and touring in Charlotte, and we'll do our best to let you know about it.
