The Flash: Rebirth No. 1

The Deal: The second superhero to hold the mantle of the Flash -- the one from the Silver Age of comics in the late 1950s -- is back from the dead. And he's getting the grand reintroduction in The Flash: Rebirth, a limited series that promises to revamp the entire mythology behind DC's popular speedsters.

The Good: I'll be honest: I'm not and never have been an avid reader of Silver Age comics. (Hey, I was born in the '70s.) As a result, I never really got to know the ins and outs of Barry Allen -- the Silver Age Flash. He was a blank slate as far as I was concerned. So when he died back in the 1980s, I was like, "Good riddance." But while I'm not a fan of Barry Allen, I am a fan of writer Geoff Johns. I was confident that I'd get to know Allen under Johns' creative direction -- and he didn't let me down. This first issue of Rebirth fleshed out the character and personality of Allen more than I've ever seen in a modern comic; in this debut edition, Johns successfully makes the case for why this version of the Flash should be running around the DC Universe at this moment in time. Now on the art tip, penciller Ethan Van Sciver doesn't disappoint either, with his ultra-detailed line work and great sense of design.

The Bad: Nada.

The Verdict: This is one comic to buy and one series to follow. Highly recommended.
