Review of Thunderbolts No. 121

Thunderbolts No. 121

Published by Marvel Comics. Written by Warren Ellis. Art by Mike Deodato.

The Deal: Acclaimed writer Warren Ellis and artist Mike Deodato wrap up their run on Thunderbolts -- Marvel's superhero team that's actually made up of super villains -- with this latest issue of the series. This issue also provides closure to several storylines and subplots that have been bubbling since the creative team took over the book.

The Good: Ellis, no stranger to controversy, recently started a shit storm when he announced that he would be leaving the book, pissing off fanboys by saying he wanted to work more on his own creations. But, really, instead of bitching and moaning about Ellis not being loyal to Marvel, readers should be happy such a talent decided to pen a really great set of comic book stories. Ellis' tales were seemingly effortless yarns that presented some of the richest characterizations, boldest ideas and wittiest lines I've ever seen in comics -- and he did it with an economical approach to dialogue and exposition. Ellis is a writer who folks should be studying and swiping from -- not assaulting in Internet forums. Complementing Ellis' stellar scripts was top-notch art from Deodato, still rendering images in his shadowy, photorealistic style. I'm so glad he decided to drop that scratchy, Image-influenced technique he utilized back in the day. His new style -- which he's been using for a few years now -- is a lot more focused on shape and form and less on lines, making for cleaner pages.

The Bad: Well, I wish that Ellis was not leaving the book. He will be missed. Next issue, which is helmed by a new creative team, presents a tie-in to Secret Invasion. In other words, the end is probably near.

The Verdict: You should totally buy this last Ellis/Deodato issue of Thunderbolts. Buy it and then sit down with his whole run on the series and read the entire story at one time. It's good stuff.
