Ring of Roaring Fun

Tuesday, July 3

Taking over a city near you! The UniverSoul Circus comes to Charlotte with a ringfull of fresh odities. Ringmaster Tony Tone will crack you up with his impressions that garnered notice on HBO Def Comedy Jam and BET Comic View. Along with his reliable and real (urban that is) sidekick, Zeke, this is the perfect opening to a more contemporary circus experience. The whole neighborhood is coming along for the party, so prepare to meet members like The Willy Family of tight-rope walkers and Caribbean Experience -- showing the death-defying trick of limbo ablaze. Leave your troubles at the tent because tonight, everyone's 10 again. Tue/Thu/Fri, 7:30 p.m.; Wed/Sun, 1 p.m., 4 p.m.; Thu/Fri, 10:30 a.m.; Sat, 12 p.m., 4:30 p.m., 8 p.m.; Sun, 7 p.m. $16.50-$18.50. Charlotte Merchandise Mart, 800 Briar Creek Road. 704-333-7709. www.carolinasmart.com.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
