Rolling Out the Yellow Brick Road

Monday, October 15

Time to celebrate, my pretties. Children's Theatre of Charlotte is launching its 60th season in epic MGM style with The Wizard of Oz. Local theater legend Alan Poindexter directs and cross-dresses as the Wicked Witch of the West -- and the venerable Jill Bloede cross-dresses right back as The Cowardly Lion. Yes, this is the ding-dong musical version, ticket sales projected to go "Over the Rainbow" at wondrous McColl Family Theatre through Oct. 20, so you need to snag seats ASAP. The Web site is also a great place to sort through the complex scheduling of afternoon and evening performances. Times vary. $16/$21. ImaginOn, 300 E. 7th St. 704-973-2828.

  • On Saturday, Oct. 21, hundreds gathered at Camp North End on Statesville Avenue for Charlotte's first black alternative music festival. We captured some of the bands in action on stage, but mostly we surveyed the grounds as fans, families, vendors and more lounged around the sprawling, colorful Camp North End site. It was a great day of music, food, fun, and sweet, autumn sunshine. (Photos by Mark Kemp)
