Re: “Question the Queen City: When an elephant roamed Charlotte

I just stumbled onto your website while looking at the West Mecklenburg High School site and the article on the west side of Charlotte. I lived off of Wilkinson Blvd from 1953 to 1963 when I joined the Navy - never to return afterwards except to visit family. My sister, Marsha Harben - now deceased - was almost 10 years old when Vicki went on her walkabout. I don't remember the circumstances, however, a local radio station had her record a little ditty about Vicki's escapade; the chorus went something like this:

Where's Vicki
Anybody seen Vicki, Vicki?
Anybody seen an elephant,
Anybody seen a tusk,
She's been gone since dawning,
Now it's way past dusk.

It got several plays on the local radio stations, then ended when Vicki was captured. The Vicki article brought back a distant memory of my childhood on the west side of Charlotte. Other memories include: Park-N-Shop and their Siamese twins at the checkout counter, Pneumafil, the school bus yard, Tanzy's Pizza, Suttle's pool, Berryhill School, Little Rock Grill, the South 29 Drive In and the night the screen burned, and, of course, Harbor Lights at the airport.
