RYE RYE

Building on the spine of Baltimore club music, a hard-hitting, staccato crossbreed of streetwise hip-hop and cut ‘n’ paste breakbeat, effervescent pop-rapper Rye Rye retains her proficiency with B’more gutter ‘n’ grime but leavens it with giddy candy-coated vocals, bubblegum flow and hedonism-with-a-wink rhymes. A protégé of Sri Lankan-British rap visionary M.I.A., Rye Rye had an LP’s worth of material in the can in 2009, and was poised to break big. Yet on the eve of a world tour, Rye Rye dropped out, revealing that she was six months pregnant and that her then-boyfriend had been crippled in a senseless street shooting. Now a mother, Rye Rye has bounced back, with her spunk, grit and optimism undimmed. Her debut LP, Go! Pop! Bang!, saw release in 2012. It showcases Rye Rye’s cheeky charisma and her wickedly funny, frequently filthy couplets. A joint assault with M.I.A. on Ethel Merman’s showbiz chestnut “Annie Get Your Gun” is simply icing on the cake. Despite setbacks and the exigencies of life just happening, Rye Rye continues to keep it positive. Yet her irrepressible, slightly snarky kid sister flow isn’t escapism. It’s life affirmation.
